Subaru’s Forester was among the first car-based SUV’s to hit the market and the 2014 model is a milestone in the model’s evolution with the addition of a new turbo engine and transmission options.
The forester will be available in two flavors; the 2.5i and 2.0XT. The 2.5i will feature the same 170-hp 2.5-liter flat four-cylinder engine as the current model. The 2.0XT will feature a 2.0-liter, 250-hp turbo four-cylinder engine.
The 2.5i will be available in base, Premium, Limited and Touring trim levels. Subaru will offer only the Premium and Touring trim levels for the 2.0XT.
The 2.5i and 2.5i Premium will be available with a six-speed manual transmission. A CVT will replace the current four-speed automatic transmission on all other trim levels.
The 2.5i’s engine has plenty of get up for average, around town driving and the additional gear gives the manual transmission some additional pep while keeping the engine revs low.
Although the 2.0XT turbo four isn’t available with a manual transmission, it does offer three drive modes. In the Intelligent mode, the 2.0XT is adequately responsive. Throttle response is quick in Sport mode, and Sport Sharp mode takes that responsiveness up another notch by switching the CVT into a paddle / lever-selectable pseudo-eight-speed-automatic. The Forester 2.0XT’s sport-tuned suspension makes the 2014 Forester is equally at home both on- and off-road.
All trim levels of the 2.0XT, and the Limited and Touring versions of the 2.5i feature X-Mode, which offers lower gear rations and improved traction for downhill driving.
The Forester’s interior has been revamped to make it quieter and more appealing. The 2.5 with the CVT is expected to deliver fuel economy of up to 32-mpg highway / 24 city. The Forester is already one of Subaru’s best-selling models, and the automaker is confident the combination of improved fuel efficiency and utility will build on that success.
